#84: Hey Dancer, Stop Working So Hard (And Start Working Smarter)

January 15, 2026

Stop Working So Hard (And Start Working Smarter)

You’re working hard. And I’m proud of you for that.

You’re in class every day. You’re taking your technique classes. You’re running your solo. You’re dancing at home. You have discipline. You have work ethic.

But let me ask you this:

Do you have direction?

Because working hard without a plan is one of the fastest ways to get frustrated, burnt out, and stuck.

I see this all the time — dancers and parents looking for more classes, more conventions, more workshops, more training… thinking that the answer is always more.

But if working harder already worked…
You’d already have the results you want.

More Isn’t Always Better

Not every dancer in your class has the same goals.

Some of you want to perform professionally.
Some of you want to dance in college.
Some of you want to be content creators.
Some of you just love dance and want to feel confident.

And that’s exactly why doing the same thing as everyone else isn’t always going to get you where you want to go.

Burnout doesn’t come from taking class.
Burnout comes from doing the same thing over and over with no clear direction.

Vague Goals = Slow Progress

“I want better turns.”
“I want better facials.”
“I want to be more confident.”

Those are great… but they’re not specific enough to create change.

Because what kind of turns?
What part of your facials?
What’s actually blocking your confidence?

When we don’t identify the real problem, we end up trying to fix everything — and that never works.

Technique, Confidence & Expression Are Connected

Here’s something dancers don’t hear enough:

Your technique issues affect your confidence.
Your confidence affects your expression.
And none of that gets fixed by just trying harder.

You can’t ask your face to be free if your body feels unsafe.
You can’t expect confidence if you’re constantly worried about falling.

That’s why targeted strategy matters.

Stop Fixing Everything. Start Fixing One Thing.

Instead of trying to correct ten things at once, ask yourself:
What is the real issue?

If you’re falling out of your turns — why?
If your facials feel forced — why?
If you feel awkward — where is that coming from?

Once you identify the problem, you can create a plan.
And that’s where real progress starts.

This Week’s Challenge

Pick one thing to work on.

Not ten.
Not everything.
One.

Write it down. Put it on a Post-it. Stick it on your mirror.
And start showing up with intention.

Because working smarter will always beat working harder.

And if you don’t know what to work on yet? That’s okay. Ask. Reach out. Get help.

You don’t have to do this alone.
