As we step into a new year, it’s natural to feel motivated, inspired, and ready to make big changes in your dancing. New year = new goals… right?
But here’s the truth most dancers don’t want to hear:
wanting something is not the same as working toward it.
In this episode of Dance Colleges & Careers, we’re talking about how to set real, achievable dance goals for 2026 — not wishful thinking, not vague hopes, but goals that actually move the needle.
If you’re serious about improving this year, this is where it starts.
One of the biggest mistakes dancers make is confusing wishes with goals.
A wish sounds like:
“I hope I get better turns.”
“I want to be more confident on stage.”
“I’d love to make the team.”
A goal sounds like:
“I am working toward stronger turns by improving my core and alignment.”
“I am actively practicing performance skills in class.”
“I am preparing my body and mindset for auditions.”
Wishes are passive.
Goals are backed by action.
If there’s no plan, no strategy, and no change in behavior… it’s not a goal. It’s just a hope.
Every effective goal has three parts:
The Result You Want
What’s Currently Blocking You
The Change You’re Willing to Make
You cannot skip step two.
Because if you don’t identify what’s in the way, you’ll keep repeating the same patterns and wondering why nothing changes.
Let’s say your goal is:
“I want to go from a double pirouette to a triple.”
Great. That’s the result.
Now ask:
Where do I fall out?
What do my teachers constantly correct?
What feels weak or unstable?
If the answer is core strength, then your real goal is not “more turns.”
Your real goal is:
“I am strengthening my core consistently so my turns can improve.”
That might mean:
10 minutes of core work at home every night
Being more intentional in class instead of just marking
Asking for specific feedback instead of hoping it gets better
See the difference?
That’s a goal.
This is a big one.
So many dancers say:
“I just want to look more confident.”
“I want to use my face more.”
“I want to actually look like I’m enjoying it.”
But when I ask why they don’t… the answers are usually:
“I feel stupid.”
“I’m scared I’ll look fake.”
“I overthink everything.”
So the barrier isn’t talent.
It’s fear + comfort + habit.
Which means the goal becomes:
“I am practicing expression in class, not just saving it for the stage.”
That might look like:
Committing to full-out facials in combinations
Letting yourself look silly in rehearsal
Practicing performance in the mirror at home
Confidence doesn’t magically appear at competitions.
It’s built in the uncomfortable moments first.
Here’s the part most dancers (and parents) skip:
Your results are a reflection of your habits.
If you want:
more stamina → you may need better conditioning
more confidence → you may need to practice being uncomfortable
more strength → you may need to change how you train
more growth → you may need to change how you think
Goals are not achieved by motivation.
They are achieved by daily behavior.
And yes — that’s the hard part.
But it’s also the part that actually works.
Not what you hope for.
Not what you wish would change.
What are you actually willing to:
practice
train
commit to
and show up for?
Because that’s where your real growth will come from.
