You know that feeling when you just can’t start something until everything around you feels “ready”?
That was me — standing in my beautifully chaotic office, surrounded by piles of notebooks, props, and half-labeled bins, convincing myself I couldn’t record my next podcast episode until the space was absolutely perfect.
The funny part? The more I cleaned and rearranged, the more I realized I wasn’t getting ready — I was procrastinating.
And that’s exactly what so many dancers do too.
We wait to “feel ready.” We wait until our technique is flawless, until we have the perfect costume, until we feel confident enough to let our facials shine. But here’s the truth: perfectionism isn’t preparation — it’s a pause button disguised as productivity.
In my case, it was my podcast equipment and piles of office supplies.
In your case, it might be waiting for the right choreography, the right cast list, or the right mood before you go all in.
But progress doesn’t happen in the waiting — it happens in the doing.
You can’t build confidence or artistry by thinking about it. You build it by practicing, failing a little, adjusting, and trying again.
That’s why your teachers tell you to practice facials in class, not just on stage. You can’t suddenly “turn on” performance energy under bright lights if you’ve never trained it under fluorescent ones.
Confidence isn’t found — it’s built. And repetition is what builds it.
Even now, my office is finally clean, but I know it won’t stay perfect. The minute I pull out my next project, a new mess will appear — and that’s okay.
The same goes for your artistry. As soon as you master one level, the next one begins. Perfection keeps moving upward, and that’s what makes this journey exciting.
You don’t need a flawless start. You just need to start.
💡 Stop waiting for the perfect moment to show up as the dancer you want to be.
The stage doesn’t reward the ones who waited — it rewards the ones who practiced through the mess.
So hit record, take that class, post that video, start messy, and move forward anyway.
You’ll discover your confidence in the doing, not the waiting.
