#79: The Blind Spot — Why What You Feel on Stage Isn’t Always What They See

Spotting the Blind Spot: Why Dancers Don’t Always See What the Audience Sees

Have you ever walked off stage feeling like you nailed it—only to watch the video back and cringe?
Or read feedback that seemed completely out of left field?

That gap between what we think we’re showing and what the audience actually sees… that’s what I call the blind spot.

My Wake-Up Call

Back in high school, I was thriving. Winning awards. Feeling unstoppable. And then one day, during critiques, a judge described me as spastic.

It crushed me.

What I thought looked powerful and energetic actually came across as uncontrolled. What I felt on the inside was not what people were seeing on the outside.

That moment changed me forever. I realized that working hard wasn’t enough—I needed awareness. I had to see and understand my blind spots before they cost me more than just a score.

Why Blind Spots Matter

Here’s the tricky thing: blind spots are invisible to us.

  • We think our facials look authentic—when in reality, they might read as forced or silly.

  • We think our energy looks powerful—when it might actually look sloppy.

  • We think we’re telling a clear story—when the audience is left confused.

This disconnect is why feedback is so critical. Teachers, coaches, and judges can see what we can’t. They notice the tiny adjustments—lift your chin, open your chest, adjust your focus—that completely change how your performance is received.

The Danger of Ignoring Feedback

When I got that “spastic” comment, my instinct was to shrink back. I felt embarrassed and wanted to avoid taking risks with my performance. That’s what so many dancers do: they stop using facials, they tone down their energy, they play it safe.

But avoiding your blind spot doesn’t make it disappear. It just keeps you stuck.

Respect and the Role of Teachers

Here’s something I’ve learned over years of teaching and performing: your teachers are constantly pointing out blind spots.

Sometimes their notes feel ridiculous. “Smile bigger.” “Look up and out.” “Tell the story with your face.”

And as dancers get older, the temptation is to roll our eyes and think, I know better. But blind spots don’t care how much experience you have. Even in college, I watched classmates ignore clear notes—only to look out of place and awkward on stage.

The dancers who grow fastest are the ones who choose to respect the feedback, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Closing the Gap

Blind spots don’t fix themselves. Watching endless videos of yourself won’t close the gap either—you’ll always judge through your own lens.

The key is feedback and coaching. That’s how you bridge the distance between your intention and your actual performance.

That’s exactly why I built Fame Academy. It’s designed to give dancers the outside perspective, structure, and guidance they can’t get alone. Inside, we tackle the exact areas that hold dancers back—facial expressions, storytelling, and confidence—and turn them into breakthroughs.

Because the truth is:
👉 Don’t wait for an embarrassing critique to reveal your blind spot.
👉 Get ahead of it with feedback now—so you finally perform the way you intend.

Final Thought

That critique that called me “spastic” stung. But it was also the best thing that could have happened. It woke me up to the gap between how I felt and how I was perceived.

Don’t wait for your wake-up call.
Start closing your blind spots today, and you’ll step on stage with clarity, confidence, and control.

Be brave. Tell your story. Own your stage. 💛
