The Grass Isn’t Greener: Why Studio Envy Holds Dancers Back

Do you ever catch yourself thinking, “If my child were at a different studio, everything would be better?”
More classes. More opportunities. More recognition.

It’s a tempting thought. But here’s the truth: constantly dreaming of what’s on the other side often keeps dancers from blooming where they’re planted.

The Studio Switch Temptation

This week I spoke with a parent whose daughter was begging to move studios. She wanted more lyrical, more contemporary, more hip hop, more master classes—basically, more of everything she thought she was missing.

And as parents, our first instinct is to ask: Wouldn’t she be better off somewhere else?

But then reality sets in. The finances don’t line up. The schedule doesn’t work. Or we realize that chasing opportunities somewhere else doesn’t always solve the real issue.

When “More” Isn’t Better

Here’s the hard truth: just because a studio offers more styles or wins more trophies doesn’t guarantee your child will suddenly level up.

I’ve seen dancers switch studios only to find the same challenges—lack of focus, weak fundamentals, or frustration with peers who don’t try as hard. Studio envy rarely fixes habits.

It’s not about hopping to where someone else is succeeding. It’s about learning how to maximize the opportunities already in front of you.

Growth Comes From Effort, Not Environment

Don’t get me wrong—sometimes switching is the right move. Maybe the teaching isn’t strong, or the values don’t align. But more often, dancers fall into the trap of believing success lives somewhere else.

The reality? Success follows the dancer who works hard, no matter the studio.
💡 The grass isn’t greener on the other side. The grass is greener where you water it.

How to Water Your Own Grass

Instead of chasing the “perfect” studio, ask:

  • Is my child taking full advantage of every class they have?

  • Are they showing up focused, consistent, and ready to sweat?

  • Have we sought out workshops, online coaching, or guest teachers to fill specific gaps?

Opportunities are everywhere—local intensives, online coaching (yes, even Zoom!), and specialized programs like my Fame Academy. The key is learning how to bridge the gap instead of running from it.

Final Thought

If your dancer keeps one foot in the studio and one foot out the door, waiting for the “next place,” they’ll stay stuck. But when they choose to plant themselves fully, growth is inevitable.

So before you jump to greener pastures, ask yourself:
Am I watering the grass where I am?

Because that’s where the real transformation begins.

Be brave. Tell your story. Own your stage. 💛
