#76: Choreography Made Simple: How to Learn Dances Quickly

September 17, 2025

How to Pick Up Choreography Faster (Even If You’ve Always Struggled)

Do you ever feel like everyone else in class picks up choreography faster than you? It’s frustrating, even embarrassing. You’re standing there, watching the teacher, but your brain just can’t keep up. I’ve been there too—at my home studio, I always felt behind compared to dancers like Macy and DJ who could memorize instantly. Even when I was technically strong, that negative thought loop—“I’m just not good at picking up choreography”—held me back for years.

The truth is: picking up choreography isn’t about talent, it’s about strategy. And with the right tools, you can train your brain and body to learn faster, perform more confidently, and actually enjoy the process.

1. Fuel Your Focus with Food & Water

Sometimes the biggest barrier is the simplest one: you’re hungry or dehydrated. Your brain and body can’t focus if they’re running on empty. A good meal and plenty of water can make the difference between zoning out and locking in.

2. Change the Self-Talk

While you’re tearing yourself down (“I’m dumb, I don’t get it”), the teacher is giving more choreography. That inner voice steals your focus. Swap the negative loop for:

  • “I’ve got this.”

  • “I’m learning faster every time.”

  • “I am smart and capable.”

Your brain listens to what you say.

3. Look for Patterns

Nothing in choreography is random—it always connects to the music. Find the rhythms, repeats, or accents. When you spot the pattern, your brain has a shortcut to remember the movement.

4. Go Full Out for Muscle Memory

Marking is helpful sometimes, but muscle memory only kicks in when you dance full out. Arms especially should always be full out. Your body learns by doing—so the more you actually dance it, the faster you’ll remember it.

5. Teach Yourself While You Learn

One of my secret tricks: pretend you’re the teacher. When I explain it to myself in my head—like I’m about to teach it to someone else—it sticks. This active learning keeps me engaged instead of just copying.

6. Decode Your Teacher’s Style

Not every teacher gives counts. Some use lyrics, rhythms, or sound effects. Instead of shutting down, translate their style into what works for your brain. If you’re a counter, give yourself counts. If you’re lyric-driven, use words. The key is to decode, not complain.

7. See the Big Picture

Don’t just think “step, kick, hand.” Watch it as a performance from start to finish. Seeing the overall flow helps your brain connect the dots and remember the routine as a whole.

Final Thoughts

Picking up choreography is a skill you can train. By fueling your body, shifting your mindset, spotting patterns, and using strategies that fit your learning style, you’ll stop feeling left behind and start dancing with confidence.
