#75: Stage Presence Is NOT Something You’re Born With: How to Train It and Transform Your Confidence on Stage

You’re Not Born With Stage Presence—Here’s How I Learned to Train It

Have you ever watched a dancer on stage and thought, “Wow, they’re just a natural. I could never look like that”?

I used to think the same thing. And honestly? It made me angry. Because people throw around this idea that stage presence is something you either have or you don’t. Like you’re born with a spotlight inside you—or you’re doomed to blend into the back row.

But that’s not the truth. And I learned it the hard way.

The Bullying That Made Me Quit Facial Expressions

As a teenager, I cared. I tried. And because of that, I got made fun of. I was bullied in the studio for practicing facial expressions. The message was clear: it wasn’t “cool” to care.

So I stopped. I shut down my stage presence because I didn’t want to be a target. And for a while, I stayed small.

Six Shows a Day Changed Everything

When I was 19, I got hired for my first professional dance job at Frontier City in Oklahoma. We performed six shows a day, sometimes seven days a week.

By the end of that summer, I walked back into auditions a completely different person. Confident. Comfortable. Ready.

One of my mentors, Angie Sellers, pulled me aside and said words that changed my life:

“Brittany, you need to step into every audition like you did today.”

She was right. I was on fire that day—not because I was suddenly “born with stage presence,” but because I had trained it. Repetition built confidence. Performing daily made expression natural.

Lessons From the Ballet Barre

In college, my ballet teacher, Jo Rowan, had us perform at the barre. Yes, even pliés required expression.

At first it felt ridiculous. But when we performed O Holy Night for the Christmas show, she made us lift our chins “to the heavens.” And she was right—what felt silly in the studio looked powerful on stage.

That’s the moment I realized: stage presence is not just about smiling. It’s about telling the story of the music with your entire body.

The Rules of Stage Presence

Stage presence is not a mystery. There are systems and formulas to follow. For example:

  • Uplifting pieces → extend above the horizon, beyond the balcony.

  • Spiritual pieces → lift your expression upward, not inward.

  • Powerful pieces → let your chest, face, and eyes radiate strength.

These rules take the fear out of performing. They give you a roadmap to follow, instead of hoping stage presence magically shows up.

How You Can Train It Too

Here’s the truth: you’re not going to improve stage presence by practicing it once a year for your solo. You improve it in the daily grind:

  • Practice expressions in class, not just on stage.

  • Repeat until it feels natural.

  • Let music guide your body and face.

  • Fake it until you train it—awkwardness is part of the process.

The dancers who look natural on stage? They’ve practiced so much that it became second nature.
