#73: Dance Studio Favoritism? What Parents Should Do (and NOT Do)

August 27, 2025

The Truth About Dance Studio ‘Favorites’ — And How Parents Should Respond

When Your Child Comes Home Crying After Class…

Your child walks out of class with tears in their eyes. As a parent, your heart drops. You want to swoop in, fix it, and make everything right.

I get it — I grew up as a studio owner’s kid. I’ve been on the parent side, the dancer side, and now I own my own theater program in Orlando. I’ve seen it from every angle. And I can promise you this: the way you handle that moment can either help your child grow… or accidentally hold them back.

The Comparison Trap

One of the biggest mistakes I see — in Facebook groups, in lobbies, in car rides home — is constant comparison.

  • “Why is she always in the front?”

  • “Why does he get the solos?”

  • “Why not my child?”

Here’s the tough love: comparison doesn’t get your dancer anywhere. It distracts, discourages, and creates negativity that seeps into class. Instead, start asking: What can my child learn from the dancer in front? Because every strength your child envies in someone else… someone else is probably envying something in them.

Understanding “Favorites” and Front Row Spots

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: favoritism.

Sometimes, yes, it happens. Teachers are human. But more often, what looks like favoritism is simply a choreographer reacting to what they see in the moment. Guest teachers don’t know who the “favorite” is. They just notice who:

  • Picks up choreography quickly

  • Shows performance energy and face

  • Is engaged and ready to learn

And here’s a hard truth: being in the front isn’t always the “reward.” Some kids thrive in the second row. Some need time in the back to build confidence. Placement is fluid. Growth is constant.

What Not to Do

The fastest way to hurt your dancer’s chances? A nasty email.

I know emotions run high when your child is upset, but firing off a message that criticizes the teacher almost never works in your favor. Think about it: would you change your whole approach because of one angry email? Probably not. Instead, you’d feel defensive. Same goes for studio owners.

Instead, open respectful dialogue:

  • “Is there something she can work on to be more confident?”

  • “What can we do at home to help her succeed in class?”

Those questions show support — not attack.

Asking Better Questions at Home

When your child cries after class, resist the urge to blame another dancer or teacher. Instead, ask questions that get to the root of their feelings:

  • “What was the hardest part for you today?”

  • “What did you feel proud of in class?”

  • “What do you want to get better at next week?”

This shifts the conversation from complaints to growth. And it teaches resilience — a skill they’ll carry long after their dance career.

The Big Picture

Being in class is a journey. Some weeks your child will shine. Some weeks they’ll struggle. But if you encourage effort, positivity, and respect, your dancer will grow in confidence and skill — no matter where they stand in the formation.
