#45 Mastering Facial Expressions to Score Higher at Dance Competition

February 12, 2025

Is Your Dancer Losing Points? Help them Fix Their Facial Expressions!

It’s competition season, and I know you’re feeling the nerves kick in. You’ve spent months perfecting your technique, refining your choreography, and making sure every detail is polished. But let me ask you this: Have you thought about your facial expressions?

Here’s the truth—judges are looking for the total package. Yes, technique matters. Yes, your lines and execution play a role. But what makes a performance truly memorable is your ability to bring it to life. And that comes down to storytelling, stage presence, and—you guessed it—facial expressions.

Why Facial Expressions Matter

Imagine sitting through 20 jazz solos in a row, all within the same age category. What’s going to make a dancer stand out? It’s not just pointed toes or perfect pirouettes—it’s the dancer who commands attention, connects with the audience, and delivers a performance that feels authentic and engaging.

When you step on stage, you’re not just executing steps. You’re telling a story. If your face is blank or stuck in a generic smile, you’re missing an opportunity to elevate your performance and make a lasting impression on the judges.

How to Improve Your Facial Expressions

  • Know Your Story: Sit down with a notebook and write down what your piece is about. What emotions should you convey? How does your character feel at each moment?
  • Practice in the Mirror: Yes, it feels silly at first. But watching yourself perform helps you see what works and what doesn’t.
  • Film Yourself: Record your rehearsals and study your facial expressions. Are they engaging? Do they match the music and movement?
  • Use Your Eyes: Your eyes tell a story just as much as your movement does. Engage with the audience and judges through your gaze.
  • Commit Fully: The best performances come from dancers who aren’t afraid to look a little ridiculous in practice. If you never push past the awkward phase, you’ll never discover your full performance potential.

Final Thoughts

Facial expressions are something you can improve quickly, and they make a huge difference in how you score at competition. If you want to take your performance to the next level, start working on this today. And remember—dance is about more than just steps. It’s about storytelling, connection, and leaving a lasting impression. So, go out there and shine!
